Insurance Claims and Safety Tips for Putra Heights Gas Pipeline Fire Victims

The General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) has shared crucial tips and FAQs for those affected by the recent Putra Heights gas pipeline fire. The guidance includes essential safety advice and steps to follow when making insurance claims.

    Safety First

Before returning home, it’s crucial to wait for official clearance from authorities. Gas exposure can have delayed effects, so be alert for symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, fatigue, and confusion. If you or your family members, especially children or the elderly, experience these symptoms, seek medical assistance immediately. Always follow the guidelines provided by authorities and emergency responders.

Steps to Take After Returning Home

    1. Ventilate the area thoroughly as residual gas may linger.
    2. Contact your insurer as soon as possible to initiate the insurance claim process and get guidance on the necessary steps.
    3. Document the damage with photos and videos before cleaning up. This evidence will support your insurance claim.
    4. Make a detailed list of damaged items, including brand, model, and serial number if possible.
    5. Obtain written approval from your insurer before proceeding with any house repairs, including emergency work. Unauthorized repairs may not be covered by your homeowners’ insurance policy.

    Understanding Your Insurance Coverage

Generally, standard insurance policies cover various aspects of damage caused by the gas pipeline explosion:

    • Fire Damage Coverage: Includes damage from direct burning, heat, smoke, and water used to extinguish fires.
    • Homeowners Policy: Covers damage from explosions, with compensation based on rebuilding costs.
    • Commercial Fire Policy: Coverage for explosions depends on policy terms, with compensation based on rebuilding costs.
    • Medical Health Insurance: Covers medical treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.
    • Personal Accident Policy: Provides coverage in case of permanent disablement or death.
    • Comprehensive Motor or Third-Party Fire and Theft Policies: Cover fire-related vehicle damage.

PIAM advises consulting your insurance agent or contacting your insurer directly to understand the specific terms of your coverage.

    Making Insurance Claims

Even if you haven’t returned home yet, contact your insurer for guidance on the claims process and to understand your coverage details. PIAM has assured that the general insurance industry is prepared to support affected policyholders through a streamlined claims process.
