The integration of artificial intelligence with vehicle camera systems is transforming road safety for commercial vehicles in the UK. According to Centrad, a leading specialist in commercial vehicle camera and telematics solutions, widespread adoption of AI-powered dashcams could save hundreds of millions of pounds annually in insurance claims.

The Growing Need for Enhanced Road Safety

The Department for Transport’s 2023 Road Accidents and Safety Statistics report revealed 14,121 accidents involving goods vehicles, buses, and coaches. Provisional data from the DfT also showed a 12% increase in reported road traffic accidents in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Consequently, insurance claims have risen, with insurers paying out £2.9 billion in motor insurance claims in Q3 last year, a 14% increase from the previous year.

    How AI-Powered Dashcams Enhance Safety

AI-powered technology can detect signs of risky driving behaviors in real-time, alerting drivers and fleet managers before incidents occur. This proactive approach helps mitigate risks associated with distracted driving, fatigue, and other hazardous behaviors. Centrad’s Managing Director, Geoff Cross, highlighted that distracted driving, particularly mobile phone usage, is a concerning trend that AI-powered dashcams can address by detecting signs of distraction and alerting drivers to correct their behavior.

    Real-World Implementation

Ashcrofts Mini Travel, a long-standing Centrad customer, recently invested in AI-powered dashcam solutions for their Yutong GT12 coaches. Director Chris Ashcroft praised the technology, stating it enables them to quickly access and download footage in case of an incident, enhancing transparency and safety.

The Future of Commercial Vehicle Safety

As insurers begin to recognize the value of AI-powered camera solutions in reducing accidents and claims, they are increasingly advising fleet operators to implement this technology as part of their insurance agreements. Centrad has observed a growing shift towards AI-powered dashcam solutions among fleet operators, driven by the need for real-time monitoring and proactive alerts beyond traditional recording capabilities.
