Lawmakers Continue Seeking Solutions to Florida’s Insurance Crisis

The Florida Legislature has adjourned, but the search for solutions to the state’s insurance crisis continues. State Rep. Toby Overdorf (R-Palm City) spoke with WFLX about the latest developments in the legislative session and the ongoing budget battle. Several bills related to homeowners’ insurance were left pending when lawmakers departed Tallahassee, an issue that House Speaker Daniel Perez (R-Miami) had identified as a priority in March.

“Property insurance is crucial to Florida’s well-being,” Perez said. “We’ve made progress, but we haven’t fully solved the problem. Are we heading in the right direction? Absolutely, we are.”

Proposals from lawmakers this session included changes to insurance litigation procedures, expanding Citizens insurance coverage, and increasing transparency among insurance providers. Overdorf believes there’s still potential for additional action.

“I remain convinced we can address more items,” Overdorf said. “I’m uncertain what those will be, but I believe we need further relief for homeowners.”

Overdorf suggested that additional funding for the My Safe Florida Home program could be part of the solution. “This is an excellent program,” he said. “I’d like to see more funds allocated to it, though our budget situation is a consideration.”
