The Rising Cost of Pet Ownership

Owning a pet is becoming increasingly expensive. According to a recent report by Rover, the average annual cost of owning a dog is estimated to be between $1,390 and $5,295 in 2025, while the average annual cost of owning a cat is between $830 and $3,095. These costs are expected to rise by 7% for dogs and 10% for cats this year.

For Sara Amato, a 37-year-old web designer from New Jersey, the cost of owning her dog Finn has been substantial. She estimates spending $722 per month on basics such as specialized food, insurance, training, and grooming, totaling $8,664 per year. Additionally, she has spent $8,804 on one-time costs, including training, unexpected medical expenses, and allergy testing.

    Factors Contributing to Rising Costs

Several factors are contributing to the rising cost of pet ownership. Inflation and newly enacted or proposed tariffs are expected to increase the prices of pet goods and services. Rover estimates that pet owners will spend 11% more on veterinary fees, 183% more on pet cleaning supplies, 20% more on grooming supplies, and 85% more on treats and chews.

The pet industry is booming, with consumers spending $150.6 billion on their pets in 2024. The American Pet Products Association predicts that this number will reach $207 billion by 2030. As pets become increasingly integral to families, owners are willing to spend more on their care and well-being.

    Planning for the Future

Experts advise pet owners to plan for the future by setting aside money for unplanned veterinary visits and emergencies. Pet insurance is also recommended as a cost-saving investment. Nicole Ellis, a certified professional dog trainer and pet lifestyle expert with Rover, suggests that pet owners consider including their pets in their wills to ensure their care in the event of their passing.

For Amato, the cost of owning Finn is worth it. “He’s like my child,” she said. Despite the financial burden, she is committed to providing Finn with the care and attention he needs to live a happy and healthy life.
