Car Insurance Costs Continue to Rise in France
Car insurance premiums in France have seen a significant increase, with multiple studies indicating a year-on-year rise of around 5%. The cost of car insurance varies greatly depending on the region of residence, vehicle model, and driver’s age.
National Average Insurance Costs
According to LeLynx.fr’s annual car insurance barometer, the nationwide average cost of car insurance is €545 per year. However, another comparison tool, Assurland, estimates this average to be between €634 and €672, depending on the criteria used.
Regional Disparities in Car Insurance Costs
Regional differences in car insurance costs are substantial. The most expensive regions include:
- Corsica: €661 on average per year, with Ajaccio being the most expensive city at €831.72 per year.
- Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur: €624, with Marseille averaging €805 per year.
- Île-de-France: €602, with varying costs across different cities.
- Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: €553, with Vénissieux at €668.28.
Conversely, the regions with lower average insurance costs are:

- Pays de la Loire: €473
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine: €487
Car Insurance Costs by Vehicle Model
The type of car can also influence insurance costs.
The five cheapest car models to insure, the barometers show, are:
- Dacia: €588 (LeLynx), €461 (Assurland)
- Honda: €637, €531
- Suzuki: €651, €536
- Nissan: €667, €625
- Kia: €675, €615
In contrast, the most expensive car brands to insure are:
- Porsche: €1,019 (LeLynx), €1,241 (Assurland)
- Audi: €944, €841
- Tesla: €981, €949
- Land Rover: €926, €875
- Mercedes: €932, €868
Age Factor in Car Insurance Costs
Younger drivers, particularly those under 25, face significantly higher insurance premiums. LeLynx found that drivers under 25 paid an average of €939 in 2024, almost double the €494 paid by drivers over 25.
The increase in premiums for younger drivers is partly attributed to the lowering of the minimum driving age to 17, resulting in more young drivers entering the market. Additionally, increased claims due to extreme weather conditions and damage from hail and flooding have contributed to the overall rise in insurance costs.

Olivier Moustacakis, co-founder of Assurland, noted that ‘all these factors together have led to this generalised average increase.’ The trend is expected to continue, emphasizing the need for drivers to compare insurance quotes carefully and explore available options to minimize costs.
