The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has activated its Virtual Community Assistance Mobile Pavilion (V-CAMP) to provide insurance information and support to residents affected by the ongoing wildfires in northern Manitoba. The fires have forced the evacuation of approximately 17,000 people and led to a province-wide state of emergency.
IBC is coordinating closely with provincial and municipal officials, as well as emergency management agencies, to respond to the evolving situation and ensure timely support. Aaron Sutherland, vice-president, Pacific and Western, IBC, emphasized that the bureau’s priority is to ensure evacuees have access to insurance resources during this difficult period. “We want to make sure those being evacuated from their homes can easily access the insurance supports they need at this difficult time,” he said.
The IBC is offering guidance on its Wildfires & Insurance webpage, providing details about insurance coverage, claims processes, and additional living expenses. Standard home insurance policies generally cover fire damage, including fires that start on neighbouring properties, unless caused intentionally by the policyholder. Most policies include coverage for Additional Living Expenses (ALE) for those ordered to evacuate by authorities. Policyholders are advised to keep receipts for temporary accommodation, meals, and other related expenses.
To begin a claim, residents should contact their insurance representatives. Once it is safe to return, policyholders should document and photograph any damage, retain receipts for cleanup and living expenses, and keep evidence such as warranties and proof of purchase. The IBC also recommends that residents inspect seasonal or secondary properties, such as cottages, as coverage terms may differ from those for primary residences. Any damage to these properties should be reported promptly.
Through V-CAMP and ongoing collaboration with emergency officials, IBC will continue to provide support to residents affected by the wildfires, helping them navigate insurance concerns during this emergency.
