Severe storms can leave a trail of destruction, from power outages and fallen trees to broken windshields and damaged homes. Rebuilding and recovering after such events takes time, and for many, it involves dealing with the loss of personal belongings and property. Insurance can play a crucial role in replacing these losses.

Austin Bowman, an agent with Alfa Insurance, explains that standard homeowners insurance covers not just the dwelling structure but also personal belongings and other structures on the property. “Standard homeowners insurance covers the dwelling structure, which is the standing structure of the home and your personal belongings, so your personal property as well as your other structures,” Bowman said. This includes coverage for personal property that is stolen or damaged during a covered event, such as a tree falling into the home.

However, not all events are covered under a standard policy. For instance, damage from lightning strikes may require additional endorsements to ensure specific belongings are protected. “We offer an endorsement here with Alfa that covers lightning surges and strikes to their appliances,” Bowman explained. “People worry about their laptops, their TVs, their refrigerators, their freezers.”

Storms can also have a ripple effect, damaging vehicles with high winds or fallen trees. Bowman clarifies that vehicle damage is covered under auto insurance policies, specifically through comprehensive coverage. “For weather-related events, your comprehensive coverage is going to come into effect,” he said. This coverage includes damages from trees falling on vehicles, hail damage, and windshield replacement, all falling under the comprehensive deductible.

It’s crucial for policyholders to understand that not all insurance policies are created equal. Bowman encourages individuals to consult with their insurance agents to grasp what their specific policies cover. For more information on homeowners or auto insurance, you can reach out to Alfa Insurance or your personal insurance provider.

In the aftermath of severe storms, being informed about insurance coverage can make a significant difference in recovery efforts. Understanding the nuances of your policy can help ensure you’re adequately protected against future events.
