Aflac Breached by Widespread Cyberattack, Potentially Exposing Personal Information

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Insurance company Aflac announced Friday that it had been impacted by a cyberattack that potentially exposed the personal information of its customers. The company identified “suspicious activity” in its U.S. network on June 12 and acknowledged that other insurance companies were also affected.

Aflac attributed the attack to a “sophisticated cybercrime group” and is conducting a review of potentially impacted files. Preliminary results show that sensitive information, including claims data, health information, social security numbers, and other personal details related to customers, beneficiaries, employees, and agents, was exposed during the breach.

“While our teams work to review the potentially impacted data and determine the specific information involved, we are offering any individual who contacts our dedicated call center free credit monitoring and identity theft protection, and Medical Shield for 24 months,” Aflac stated.

Other insurance companies, including Erie Insurance and Philadelphia Insurance Companies, have also reported hacking incidents this month. Sources told CNN that a group called Scattered Spider may be responsible for the attacks. This group gained notoriety in 2023 after hacking several high-profile Las Vegas casinos and hotels.

Aflac’s response includes offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to potentially affected individuals. The company is working to determine the full extent of the breach and notify those affected.
