Supplemental insurance provider Aflac has confirmed it’s investigating a data breach that may have compromised customer information. The company detected “suspicious activity on our network” on June 12 and immediately launched an investigation. According to Aflac’s statement on June 20, a sophisticated cybercrime group gained unauthorized access to their network, although business operations remained unaffected.
Preliminary findings suggest that potentially impacted files may contain sensitive information, including claims data, health information, social security numbers, and other personal details related to customers, beneficiaries, employees, and agents associated with their U.S. business operations. The review is still in its early stages, and Aflac is currently unable to determine the total number of individuals affected.
As the investigation continues, Aflac is providing support to potentially affected individuals by offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection through Medical Shield. Customers can access more information about this offer by contacting the dedicated Aflac call center at 1-855-361-0305. The call center operates on an extended schedule through the end of June, available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
Aflac has expressed regret over the incident and committed to keeping stakeholders informed as more information becomes available during the ongoing investigation. The company is working diligently to determine the specific information involved and the extent of the breach.
