Erie Insurance is making steady progress toward resuming normal operations following a significant network outage that began in early June. The outage was triggered by the discovery of a security breach in the company’s system on June 7, prompting Erie Insurance to proactively initiate protective outages to contain the threat.
In an update posted on June 27, the company reported ‘consistent progress’ in restoring its usual operations. Key business systems and applications, including online account access for policyholders, have been ‘safely and securely’ reconnected. Erie Insurance has stated that there is currently no evidence of ransomware or ongoing threat actor activity.
The company’s investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the assistance of leading cybersecurity experts. Erie Insurance is working diligently to determine what data, if any, may have been affected during the breach. The recovery process is being conducted in a phased and prioritized manner, guided by the company’s values and founding principles, with a focus on maintaining service above all else.
Despite the operational challenges caused by the proactive outages, Erie Insurance’s local agents, claims, and customer care teams continue to support customers. Policyholders can initiate claims by contacting their local ERIE agent or the First Notice of Loss team at (800) 367-3743. Customer Care is available at (800) 458-0811.
As of June 30, some local providers, such as Wert Insurance Agency Inc., reported that the Erie system was back up and operational, although some customers were experiencing issues accessing their online accounts. However, the ‘one time payment’ feature was reportedly working, and customers were able to make payments at www.erieinsurance.com.
Erie Insurance has expressed appreciation for customer support and understanding throughout the process and has committed to providing further updates as more information becomes available.
