When to Change Home Insurance Providers: Expert Advice

The home insurance industry is navigating through turbulent times, with rising repair costs, labor shortages, inflation, and severe weather events impacting the market. As a result, homeowners across the country are experiencing increased insurance premiums, with some states being hit harder than others. Events like hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes have significantly affected the industry, causing some insurance providers to withdraw their coverage options in states like California and Florida.

    Understanding Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners insurance provides crucial protection for what is likely your most valuable asset – your home. If disaster strikes, your insurance policy can help cover costs associated with covered perils such as fire or theft. However, the increasing cost of replacement, which refers to the money needed to repair or rebuild your home, has been a significant factor in rising premiums. According to Mark Friedlander, senior director of media relations at the Insurance Information Institute, replacement costs for homes increased by 55% between 2019 and 2022.

    Reasons to Consider Changing Providers

    1. Different Coverage Needs Home insurance providers offer varying coverage options. If you’re renovating your home, purchasing another property, or investing in high-value items like jewelry, your coverage needs may have changed. It’s essential to review your current policy and any exclusions or limits. You might find that your current provider doesn’t offer what you need, particularly if you have high-value items that require additional coverage.

    2. Poor Claims Experiences When filing a claim, a smooth process is crucial, especially during already challenging times. However, the average claim cycle time has increased to 32.4 days, according to the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study. Benjamin Bruinekool, agency principal at Western Michigan Insurance Agency, notes that claim satisfaction is critical and that miscommunications at the field level can lead to dissatisfaction. If you’re unhappy with how your provider has handled a claim, it’s reasonable to explore other options.

    3. Significant Price Hikes Insurance companies are struggling to balance service, value, and profitability. Jesse L. Kohlbecker, vice president of claims and client services at COUNTRY Financial, highlights the pressure on premiums due to significant storm volumes. If you’re facing substantial price hikes, shopping around and comparing multiple quotes can help you determine if your current rate is competitive or if you can find a better deal elsewhere.

    Considerations Before Switching

Before making any changes, it’s advisable to discuss your situation with your current insurance provider. Kohlbecker suggests that carriers can tailor coverage and deductible amounts to better meet your needs. Communication preferences also play a significant role in customer satisfaction. According to the J.D. Power study, satisfaction scores are more than twice as high when customers find it easy to communicate with their provider.

    The Bottom Line

While loyalty to your home insurance provider might qualify you for discounts or customized coverage, it’s essential to weigh this against your current needs and satisfaction. If you’re not satisfied or have different coverage requirements, exploring other options can be beneficial. When searching for a new provider, consider not only the cost but also the coverage options and the financial strength of the company. Friedlander emphasizes the importance of being with a financially strong company that can pay claims, suggesting you look for A ratings on AM Best and check customer reviews on platforms like the Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot.
