Placer County Grapples with Insurance Crisis, Requests State of Emergency
Placer County is facing a serious crisis. Homeowners and businesses are struggling with insurance costs.
On Tuesday, the Placer County Board of Supervisors voted to ask Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency. This declaration would address the challenges of finding affordable insurance for both homes and commercial properties.
The Board sent a letter with their resolution to the Governor and Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. They requested immediate, emergency actions. The goal is to stabilize the insurance market in California.
District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson shared concerns. She highlighted the problems caused by the loss of insurance for residents and businesses. She stated, “It’s truly a crisis.” Placer County sees a high rate of non-renewals. Residents are working hard to improve their properties. They desire recognition for their efforts, with insurance benefits for home hardening and defensible space practices.
A July survey showed that over half of Placer County residents faced non-renewal or higher premiums. The county is actively working to reduce wildfire risks.
Placer County now boasts the most Firewise USA communities in the nation. This program helps neighbors prepare for wildfires. Participating in the Firewise USA program may lead to insurance discounts.
The Board’s resolution calls for quicker relief than current regulations provide. They want new emergency rules to expand insurance options and improve rate approvals. The board also expressed worries about the California FAIR Plan. This plan serves as the state’s last resort for insurance. Many Placer County residents depend on this plan.
Shasta and San Bernardino counties have previously passed similar resolutions. They also requested state help in addressing the insurance crisis.
