Nationwide Cancels Pet Insurance in Florida

Pet owners in Florida are facing a tough situation. Nationwide, a big player in the pet insurance game, is dropping coverage for about 100,000 pets across the U.S. The company says rising vet costs and other issues are making it hard to stay profitable. This is causing a lot of worry among pet parents.

Nationwide started sending out cancellation notices a few months ago, and this will continue through the summer of 2025.

Robin Tobias of Aventura, Florida, said Nationwide won't renew insurance coverage for her 7-year-old dog Ginger, which has a heart murmur.
Robin Tobias of Aventura, Florida, said Nationwide won’t renew insurance coverage for her 7-year-old dog Ginger, which has a heart murmur.

One pet owner, Robin Tobias from Aventura, Florida, got a letter saying her dog, Ginger, won’t be covered. The letter stated that economic issues are hitting the pet insurance business hard, similar to challenges across the entire American insurance industry, leading to tough choices.

There’s even a Facebook group, called “Dropped by Nationwide Pet Insurance Whole Wellness? Join Us!”, where people are sharing their experiences. Some pet owners are even considering putting down sick pets because they can’t afford the vet bills without insurance.

Tobias pays around $160 a month for Ginger’s insurance. Ginger is 7 years old and has a heart murmur. “There’s a lot of people panicking,” she said.

Florida has had its own insurance issues lately. Homeowners are paying way more than the national average for home insurance, and now, this is affecting pets too.

Many insurance companies have pulled out of Florida since 2019, and car insurance rates are also among the highest in the country. The situation is causing a lot of stress for Florida residents.
