Why Pet Insurance Is Worth It: A Personal Story

As a 31-year-old journalist living in Portland, Oregon, I’ve found that pet insurance is a lifesaver. After witnessing firsthand the financial strain of unexpected vet bills, I’m convinced it’s a necessity for any pet owner. My monthly premium is $25, but the peace of mind and potential savings are invaluable.

My husband and I adopted Poppy, a tabby, from a local adoption center. Like many pet parents, we try our best to look after her well-being.

I use Fetch pet insurance, which costs about $25 a month. The online sign-up process was easy. The Fetch app is handy, allowing document uploads on the go, which provides peace of mind. For us, about $25 a month is worth it compared to vet bills that can easily reach the thousands.

During one incident, Poppy got sick after vaccinations. Fetch covered most of her treatment, and I only paid a small co-pay. Pet insurance covers her routine checkups and all other potential emergencies.

It’s a way to contribute to her quality of life.

I’ve seen several crowdfunding campaigns for pets needing expensive care. I want to provide the best possible life for Poppy.

I’ve learned firsthand how expensive pet care can be. My husband’s family had a high vet bill for a pet in the 1990s. My sister, Rose, adopted a rescue cat named Mariner.

Rose had pet insurance through her job, which cost her a small monthly fee. However, when Rose’s job situation changed, her pet insurance lapsed. Unexpectedly, Mariner became ill, costing her $5,000 in vet bills.

Pre-existing conditions can make it difficult to get pet insurance. Rose is now having trouble getting insurance for Mariner due to his previous sickness. In my experience, and my sister’s, pet insurance can be a financial safety net. I prefer to mitigate risk for our beloved pet by buying pet insurance. It guarantees her health and longevity.
