Protecting Your Identity in the Face of Rising Security Threats

Security breaches are becoming more common, underscoring the necessity of protecting your personal information. A recent breach at National Public Data (NPD) exposed millions of Americans’ Social Security numbers and other sensitive data. This incident highlights the importance of actively monitoring the security of your personal details, such as through the identity theft protection offered by the University of California (UC).

UC provides a comprehensive identity protection program, managed by Experian, for its employees, retirees, and their dependent children under 18. The best part? UC covers the cost. Enrollment in this plan is automatic, but you’ll need to set up your account to gain the full benefits of the program.

When you first become eligible for this protection, Experian will send you a welcome email with a unique link to access the Experian portal and set up your account. If you didn’t receive this email, or can’t locate it, just call Experian’s member services team at (855) 797-0052, and they’ll resend it. If Experian can’t find your eligibility record, contact UCPath if you’re a current employee or the Retirement Administration Service Center if you’re a retiree.

Experian’s Response to the National Public Data Breach

The National Public Data breach is anticipated to trigger approximately 170 million dark web alerts from Experian. This increase in alerts may lead to more calls and longer wait times at Experian’s call center.

To support UC participants and to reduce potential issues, Experian has taken the following actions:

    • Improved CyberAgent® Dark Web Monitoring Alerts to offer clearer guidance and reassurance to participants.

    • Added recommended next steps to the Experian portal dashboard.

    • Updated call center resources to assist participants in getting the help they require.

For more details about identity theft protection through Experian, visit the UCnet webpage or consult the Experian Elite Benefits Plan Guide PDF.
