A federal judge has ruled that an ex-wife is entitled to a portion of her deceased former husband’s life insurance proceeds on behalf of their daughter. The man, previously an employee of Ryder Transportation Co., died in a boating accident.
Judge Mustafa T. Kasubhai issued the decision on February 21, 2025, stating that the divorce judgment from 2019 constituted an enforceable qualified domestic relations order (QDRO). This order takes precedence over the beneficiary designation listed on the man’s $59,000 life insurance policy with Securian Life Insurance Co., which named his subsequent wife as the beneficiary.
The court’s judgment specifies the amounts designated for specific individuals, ensuring that the daughter receives the appropriate financial support as outlined in the original divorce agreement.
