BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Insurance is reminding residents about a free online tool designed to help people search for life insurance policies after the death of a family member or loved one.
The search tool is maintained by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and is available to search life insurance policies in all 50 states.
According to state officials, anyone can use the search tool, including legal representatives and beneficiaries of the deceased.
To begin a search, you will need specific information about the deceased individual: their Social Security number, legal first and last name, date of birth, and date of death. A copy of the deceased person’s death certificate is also required to complete the search.
Users should be aware that the search process may take up to 90 days to yield results. Also, you will not receive a response if no matching policies are found, or if you are neither the beneficiary nor a person with legal authority to access the policy information.
The Louisiana Department of Health reports that millions of dollars in life insurance benefits remain unclaimed each year. This is often because beneficiaries are unaware of the policies’ existence or are unable to locate them.
