The accounting and advisory firm CBIZ Inc. is now required to defend claims made by the widow of a former employee who died after battling cancer. The claims concern the company’s handling of the employee’s life insurance coverage, according to a February 21 ruling by Judge Kate M. Menendez of the US District Court for the District of Minnesota.
The widow alleges that CBIZ misled her husband about the terms of his $490,000 life insurance policy. Specifically, the company is accused of misinforming the employee about how to maintain his coverage while on disability leave due to his colon cancer diagnosis. The court dismissed related claims against Hartford Life & Accident Insurance Co.
