Getting into a car accident, even a minor one, can be a stressful and disorienting experience. Knowing the proper steps to take immediately following a crash can significantly help you manage the situation effectively. This guide outlines what you should do (and what you should avoid) after a minor car accident to ensure your safety and facilitate the necessary procedures.
If you are involved in or witness a crash where medical or police assistance is needed, or if the vehicles are damaged to the point where they cannot be driven, call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY.
Immediate Actions After a Crash
-
Stay Calm and Assess the Scene: The first priority is to remain calm. If it’s safe, do not exit your vehicle. Activate your hazard lights to alert other drivers. Politely inquire about the well-being of all involved, ensuring that no one needs immediate medical attention.
-
Document the Scene: Take photos of the following:
- License plate(s), make, and model of the vehicle(s) involved.
- Damage to all vehicles.
- Landmarks, street signs, or address markers to pinpoint the crash location.
- Any property damage or objects at the scene (e.g., debris, skid marks).
- Locate witnesses, and record their names and contact information. Gather as much visual evidence as possible.
-
Move Your Vehicle: To prevent traffic congestion and to keep yourself and any passengers safe, move the vehicle(s) if possible and if it is safe to do so.
-
Exchange Information: Exchange the following information with the other driver(s):
- Names of drivers and all passengers involved.
- Insurance information of all vehicles involved.
- Date and time of the crash.
Important Safeguard: Protect your identity. DO NOT provide your driver’s license number or address.
-
Contact Your Insurer: Contact your insurer to report the accident. Remember, The District of Columbia is a “no-fault” car insurance jurisdiction. The DMV advises drivers to notify their insurance company in the event of a crash.
