Insurance Protections Extended for Hughes Fire Survivors
Assemblywoman Pilar Schiavo’s office has successfully advocated for an expansion of insurance protections for residents affected by the Hughes Fire. California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has extended the mandatory one-year moratorium on homeowners insurance non-renewals and cancellations to include those in the fire’s burn area.
This critical measure shields homeowners from potential policy cancellations or non-renewals due to wildfire risk, providing stability for families as they recover from the disaster.

The Insurance Commissioner’s office announced that the following ZIP codes are now covered by the moratorium: 91354, 91355, 91381, 91383, 91384, 91390, 93040, 93222, 93225, 93243, and 93532.
Assemblywoman Schiavo’s office took action after learning that the affected ZIP codes were initially excluded from the moratorium, leading to concerns about insurers dropping coverage. “When we learned that Hughes Fire survivors weren’t covered under the insurance moratorium, we immediately took action, bringing this need to the Insurance Commissioner,” said Assemblywoman Schiavo. “I’m grateful for his responsiveness and for taking swift action. Our communities of Castaic, Val Verde and Santa Clarita have already been through so much, we must do everything we can to protect what is often the most important investment – your home.”
Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara emphasized the importance of the moratorium, stating, “Homeowners affected by the Hughes Fire and other devastating wildfires should not have to worry about losing their insurance coverage during this crisis.” He added that his office is working diligently to protect consumers and ensure they receive entitled benefits.
