Police in Lake Oswego, Oregon, released an image Wednesday of a person they believe fired multiple shots into a home last week. The home reportedly belongs to the chief executive of the State Accident Insurance Fund (SAIF), the state’s workers’ compensation insurance company.
Lake Oswego police responded to reports of gunfire early Friday at a residence in the 13000 block of Melrose Place in the Westlake neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers found damage consistent with gunshots to the front door of the home; no injuries were reported.
Police described the suspect as wearing dark clothing and possibly a hoodie or ski mask, carrying a light-colored object. Authorities stated that the individual “fired several rounds into the home from close range and left the area on foot,” adding that the shooter likely had a vehicle parked nearby.
According to the police, the incident was “targeted,” and they don’t believe there’s a broader community threat.
While the update did not officially name the homeowner, SAIF CEO and President Chip Terhune separately acknowledged the incident occurred at his property. A SAIF spokesperson told HuffPost, “We are aware of the incident at our president and CEO’s home. We don’t have further details at this time but are working closely with law enforcement.”
In an email obtained by KATU, a local news outlet, Terhune told SAIF staff that he initially thought the gunfire was rocks being thrown at his home. He also mentioned that he didn’t know if he was the target but expressed his intention to return to work. He urged any concerned SAIF staffers to voice their worries.
In a subsequent Saturday message to employees, acquired and published by Fox 12 Oregon, Terhune said he had received a separate email claiming responsibility for the attack. He added that the email cited “knowledge” of names of some SAIF employees and their relatives and that law enforcement was investigating the matter.
