JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi Insurance Department (MID) announced that its Life Insurance Policy Locator helped nearly 1,700 Mississippians find lost life insurance policies in 2024, totaling more than $37 million.
Since the program’s launch in 2016, it has recovered over $135 million for residents of the state. Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney (R-Miss.) emphasized the importance of life insurance for financial protection. “Life insurance protects your family financially. What better way to show someone you love them than by thinking of their future,” Chaney stated. He also pointed out the significance of Valentine’s Day as a reminder to consider purchasing life insurance. “Valentine’s Day is a good reminder to consider purchasing life insurance. Talk to your insurance agent about your options. Once you’ve bought life insurance, keep a copy of the policy somewhere your family will know to find it.”
Chaney noted that millions of dollars in life insurance benefits go unclaimed annually because beneficiaries are unable to locate policies, or in some instances, are unaware they exist. The Life Insurance Policy Locator is designed to address this issue.
