Shooting Incident at Oregon Insurance Executive’s Home Sparks Manhunt

Lake Oswego, OR – Law enforcement is actively searching for a suspect following a targeted shooting at the home of an Oregon insurance executive. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of February 21st, involved gunfire directed at the residence of Chip Terhune, President and CEO of the State Accident Insurance Fund Corporation (SAIF).

Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was deliberate. Security footage captured a potential suspect near the property, reportedly wearing dark clothing and possibly a hoodie or ski mask. Authorities believe the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

Following the attack, Terhune informed SAIF employees via an internal email that he had received a threatening message claiming responsibility for the shooting. “We have received an email threat purporting to be the person(s) responsible. Although it does not target any specific employee, the email references knowledge of employee and relatives’ names and addresses,” Terhune wrote. He advised employees to exercise caution and remain vigilant.

Law enforcement has not disclosed the precise content of the threatening email, but confirmed an ongoing investigation. Terhune is cooperating with the authorities but has refrained from making further public statements regarding the incident.

The shooting echoes a recent incident involving the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City.

Terhune has led SAIF since July 2021. SAIF is Oregon’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance with approximately 1,200 employees. The organization manages $5 billion in capital.

SAIF Corporation is a publicly owned, not-for-profit workers’ compensation insurance provider. Established to serve Oregon businesses and workers, SAIF focuses on providing affordable workers’ compensation coverage while promoting workplace safety and injury prevention programs. SAIF’s work is a vital part of Oregon’s workers’ compensation system. The company insures a significant portion of the state’s workforce, offering policies to businesses of all sizes and also emphasizes workplace safety education and resources.

Authorities are appealing to the public for any information related to the Lake Oswego shooting, urging anyone with details to contact local law enforcement as the search for the suspect continues.
