Tesla China Sees Significant Surge in Vehicle Registrations, Signaling Strong Quarter
Tesla China experienced robust growth in vehicle registrations during a recent week, indicating a potentially strong performance for the company in the Chinese market.
During the week of October 28 to November 3, 2024, Tesla China recorded 15,700 new vehicle registrations. This represents a substantial 49.52% increase compared to the 10,500 registrations logged in the preceding week ending October 27, 2024. While Tesla does not officially release weekly sales figures, vehicle registration data provides a valuable insight into the company’s performance. This data is tracked closely by industry analysts and automakers, including Li Auto.
According to recent data from Li Auto, Tesla China’s insurance registrations reached 15,700 for the week ending November 3, 2024. Analysts noted that this surge brought Tesla China’s year-over-year domestic registrations up by 6.7%. This is particularly noteworthy considering that the company’s 2024 domestic registrations had lagged behind 2023 figures until the third quarter.

Data also reveals that for the week of October 28 to November 3, approximately 15,700 Tesla insurance registrations were reported in China. This contributed to a quarter-over-quarter decrease of 8.7%, alongside a 20.0% increase year-over-year. This was the highest registration during the fifth week of the quarter and the highest weekly registration for the entire quarter.
In October 2024, recently released figures from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed that Tesla China sold 68,280 vehicles wholesale. Although these numbers are down 22.69% compared to the 88,321 wholesale vehicles sold in September 2024 and a 5.32% decline from October 2023’s 72,115 units, the week’s registration numbers suggest a positive trend.
Tesla China’s October 2024 wholesale numbers included exported vehicles. Deutsche Bank projected in late October that Tesla China may see approximately 47,000 domestic deliveries during the month. The CPCA’s report detailing Tesla China’s October export figures is expected to be released soon.

Elon Musk previously expressed a goal for Tesla to match its record vehicle deliveries from 2023 in 2024. To achieve this, Tesla would need to deliver roughly 515,000 vehicles worldwide during the fourth quarter. As one of Tesla’s largest markets and the site of Gigafactory Shanghai, the company’s primary export hub, China is expected to play a critical role in this push.

The commercial robotaxi sector continues to evolve, with Waymo and Uber partnering to launch driverless ride-hailing services in Austin, Texas.
On Tuesday, those in Austin, can take a driverless Waymo robotaxi using the Uber app. This launch comes as Tesla anticipates introducing Unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) services in Austin later this year, and after the company applied for a permit to operate ride-hailing vehicles in California.
