The California Department of Insurance announced on February 18, 2025, that an insurance fraud ring is alleged to have specifically targeted victims involved in car accidents. The scheme involved towing vehicles and effectively holding them hostage at repair shops in exchange for substantial cash payments.
The same fraud ring was previously accused of operating a nearly identical scheme in San Bernardino County back in 2022.
