Vehicle Insurance and Riot Damage: What You Need to Know

Recent events in Nagpur, including the violence on Monday, have left many vehicle owners wondering about their insurance coverage. The good news is that standard motor insurance policies generally cover damage caused by riots. However, navigating the claims process requires careful attention to detail.

Insurance experts and the guidelines provided by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA) confirm that damage to vehicles during a riot is typically covered under your regular policy.

However, the IRDA emphasizes that policy terms and conditions always take precedence. Therefore, it’s crucial to review your policy documents carefully for specific details.

AS Sheikh, a surveyor and loss assessor at Class Motors, emphasized the importance of proper procedure: “The most important step is to approach the cops and file a complaint. This must be your priority. After filing complaint, ensure that a spot panchnama is done and keep the documents properly. Also collect any news report clipping that may have got published, since we are talking about a major event, which will help to fortify the claim.”

Here’s a breakdown of the key steps to take after your vehicle is damaged in a riot:

    1. File a Police Complaint: This is the most critical first step. Get an official police report documenting the damage.
    2. Complete a Spot Panchnama: This document, prepared by the police, details the damage to your vehicle at the scene. Ensure you keep this document safe.
    3. Gather Supporting Evidence: Collect news clippings and any other documentation that supports the claim, providing evidence of the event and the extent of damage.

Once a claim is filed, the insurance company conducts its own investigation to prevent fraudulent claims. This typically involves inspecting the damaged vehicle, assessing pre-existing damage, and evaluating the damage caused by the riot.

By following these steps carefully, you can increase the likelihood of a successful insurance claim and get your vehicle repaired quickly.
