Scammers are constantly looking for new ways to steal your personal information and money. According to the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Report, identity theft is the top scam in Tennessee, with fraud losses exceeding $157 million in 2024.

To protect yourself, consider attending a Free ShredFest event in your community where you can safely dispose of documents containing personal information. Upcoming events are scheduled for April 26 in Nashville and Millington. AARP membership is not required to participate.

Here are four key tips to help you stay safe:

    1. Reduce Your Paper Trail

Take proactive steps to protect your personal and financial information:

    • Monitor your bank and credit card accounts regularly for suspicious activity
    • Opt for paperless billing and statements
    • Shred sensitive documents before disposal
    • Secure your Social Security card at home
    • Never leave personal information in your car

    2. Strengthen Your Security

    Enhance your online protection:

    • Use unique passwords for each account
    • Enable multifactor authentication
    • Avoid public Wi-Fi networks
    • Be cautious with unsolicited texts, emails, and calls
    • Use a PIN or passcode to lock your devices

    3. Protect Your Privacy

Be mindful of what you share:

    • Avoid posting personal details on social media
    • Refrain from inputting personal information into AI programs

    4. Monitor Your Data

Regularly check your credit reports through AnnualCreditReport.com to catch any discrepancies early.

If you suspect fraudulent activity, report it immediately to:

    • FTC at IdentityTheft.gov or 877-438-4338
    • FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov
    • AARP Fraud Watch Network helpline at 877-908-3360
