Rising Insurance Nonrenewals in Massachusetts
Massachusetts homeowners are increasingly facing insurance nonrenewals, despite the state being considered one of the safest in terms of natural disasters. According to a 2023 survey reported by the Boston Business Journal, insurance companies opted not to renew 1.51% of homeowner policies, up from 1.18% five years earlier.

The trend is surprising given that Massachusetts is not considered a high-risk area for natural disasters and is relatively wealthy. However, experts attribute the nonrenewals to the increasing impacts of climate change. Ishita Sen, assistant professor of finance at Harvard Business School, noted that the state’s low risk profile makes the insurance companies’ decisions unexpected.
A report by the Massachusetts state senate’s office found that climate change is beginning to affect insurance markets nationwide, with counties most exposed to climate-related risks seeing the highest nonrenewal rates. In 2023, Massachusetts experienced eight weather-related “catastrophe events,” resulting in $892.3 million in property losses.
Cape Cod, a region particularly vulnerable to violent storms, flooding, and hurricane landfalls due to its geography, has seen a significant number of nonrenewals. Megan Wright, owner of Wright Insurance Agency in Yarmouth, described nonrenewal as “a tough pill to swallow.”
Causes and Consequences
The rise in weather-related events in New England is directly linked to an increase in denied homeowners’ insurance policies. Human activities, such as burning dirty energy, contribute to global overheating, leading to unpredictable weather events. If these practices continue, other regions will likely experience unusual and unpredictable weather events.
Steps Toward Change
Several large industries are adopting cleaner business practices, reducing reliance on dirty energy and investing in clean, renewable energy. In October, 32 leading utility companies announced plans to invest over $116 billion annually in clean energy technologies. Experts remain optimistic that these efforts can help combat rising global temperatures and extreme weather events.
As the world continues to grapple with the effects of climate change, adopting clean energy initiatives will be crucial in sparking real change. The shift toward renewable energy sources and more sustainable practices is not only beneficial for the environment but also essential for mitigating the impacts of climate change on insurance markets and homeowners alike.
