    The AARP Shred ‘Em Two-Step

Fraud is on the rise, especially for older adults. In 2024, the FTC reported a sharp increase in identity theft cases nationwide. Protecting yourself is easier than you think by following these two simple steps:

    1. Gather your outdated personal and financial documents.
    2. Bring them to an AARP Shred ‘Em Day event near you.

Additional Tips to Safeguard Against Scammers

    • Shredding Documents: Shredding confidential documents is a simple way to protect your identity.
    • Avoid Unsolicited Communications: Be cautious when answering phone calls from unknown numbers. Criminals manipulate emotions to separate victims from their cash.
    • Different Passwords for Every Account: Use distinct passwords for each account to reduce the risk. Password managers can help you keep track of them.
    • Social Media Caution: Avoid online quizzes, surveys, and free apps on social media. Criminals can gather information for identity theft.
    • Use Protective Software: Install antivirus software, antispyware, a firewall, and pop-up blockers.
    • Public Wi-Fi Safety: Use a virtual private network (VPN) when on public Wi-Fi. Avoid accessing sensitive information without protection.
    • Report Fraud: If you encounter a scam, report it to the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 877-908-3360, local law enforcement, and the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

By taking these simple steps, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to identity theft and fraud. AARP Texas is committed to helping you live your best life by providing resources and support to protect your identity and financial security.
