CLEVELAND, Ohio — Aflac Inc. reported a cyberattack earlier this month that may have exposed sensitive customer information, including Social Security numbers and medical details. The insurance giant discovered “suspicious activity” on June 12 and quickly contained the breach, according to a press release.
Aflac emphasized that its core systems remained operational, allowing customers to continue filing claims, managing policies, and accessing services without interruption. The company acknowledged that a “sophisticated cybercrime group” accessed certain files, but officials have not confirmed the number of people affected or the exact information stolen.
“We remain committed to caring for and supporting our customers,” the company stated. To assist those potentially impacted, Aflac is offering 24 months of free credit monitoring, identity-theft protection, and Medical Shield coverage. Customers are encouraged to enroll in the service and remain vigilant for phishing emails or suspicious account activity.
This breach occurs as other major insurance companies, including Erie Insurance and Philadelphia Insurance Companies, report similar cyberattacks. Some of the activity has been linked to a hacking group known for using social engineering tactics to trick employees into divulging credentials.
Aflac has notified regulators and will alert affected individuals once more details are confirmed.
