AG Nessel Reissues Tax Season Consumer Alerts
LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is reminding residents to be vigilant this tax season, reissuing consumer alerts to help prevent tax-related identity theft.
Attorney General Nessel encourages taxpayers to file their returns as early as possible to reduce the risk of fraud. “Filing early is a crucial step in protecting yourself,” she stated in the alert.
The Attorney General emphasized the importance of safeguarding personal information. “Never provide your Social Security number unless you have a legitimate reason, are certain the request is authorized, and you know your information will be protected,” Nessel advised. She also urged taxpayers to use secure internet connections when filing electronically.
Nessel also provided specific advice to those concerned about potential identity theft. Individuals who suspect they have been victims of identity theft should immediately contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800-908-4490.
