Ask a Trooper: Fleet Vehicle Insurance Card Question
Fargo, ND – In a recent segment on KFGO News, Sgt. Jesse Grabow of the Minnesota State Patrol addressed a common query regarding insurance identification for commercial and fleet vehicles.
Question: The question posed by a listener concerned the information required on insurance cards presented during traffic stops, particularly for vehicles registered to businesses or fleets. Many companies provide general insurance cards that do not include the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The listener asked if the VIN is a mandatory inclusion on these cards.
Answer: Sgt. Grabow clarified the state’s requirements, stating that every insurance provider doing business in Minnesota must furnish an insurance identification card for each covered vehicle at the start of each auto insurance policy. These cards can be provided electronically.
For insured parties with five or more vehicles registered in Minnesota, the card may use the designation “all owned vehicles” instead of specifying each vehicle. However, if fewer than five vehicles are registered, the card must include the following:
- The insured’s name
- The policy number
- The policy’s coverage dates
- The make, model, and year of the vehicle
- The vehicle identification number, or at least the last three digits
- The name of the insurance provider
A portion of the information was used with permission from the Office of the Revisor of Statutes.
