The Benue State Police Command has initiated the enforcement of the third-party vehicle insurance policy throughout the state. According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Sewuese Anene, the initiative commenced with a period of public awareness and education.
SP Anene, speaking from Makurdi, the state capital, explained that this enforcement aligns with a directive from Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who has mandated strict compliance with the third-party motor insurance regulation. She further noted that the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Steve Yabanet, instructed all area commanders, divisional police officers, and traffic officers to ensure motorists’ adherence to the policy during the command’s most recent monthly conference.
“The enforcement officially started on February 1,” Anene stated. “Legal consequences, as outlined in relevant laws, will be applied to those found without the required third-party insurance. Motorists are urged to comply with the policy to avoid any inconveniences that may arise from the enforcement process. While no arrests are being made at this time, non-compliance will eventually lead to arrests.”

This action reflects the broader efforts of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that all vehicles are properly insured, protecting both drivers and the public. The command is focusing on education and awareness in the early stages of the enforcement.

The spokesperson emphasized the importance of motorists understanding and complying with the policy to avoid potential legal issues. This enforcement seeks to ensure compliance across the state and improve road safety. Police officers are actively working to ensure motorists abide by the new regulations. The focus is on creating a safer road environment and protecting the interests of all road users.
