The Better Business Bureau serving Greater West Virginia is hosting its first identity theft protection event in Morgantown on Saturday, offering residents a chance to securely dispose of personal documents and unwanted electronics. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Monongalia County Center in Mylan Park.
Residents can bring documents containing personal information, such as credit card statements, IRS tax records, and credit card offers, to be shredded on-site. Laura Blankenship of the Better Business Bureau emphasized the importance of secure disposal, stating, “We shred everything on site for you. You’re able to stand by as your personal information is shredded and disposed of.” This process ensures that sensitive information is protected from potential identity thieves.
In addition to document shredding, residents can also recycle various electronic devices, including small appliances, batteries, computers, phones, and other electronic equipment. The event aims to help residents protect themselves against identity theft, which has been on the rise. Blankenship advised, “Anything that could link a scammer to your information… you want to have shredded. It’s very important not to just throw away those items because you never know where your trash goes.”
By providing a secure and transparent process for disposing of sensitive information, the Better Business Bureau is helping Morgantown residents safeguard their personal data and reduce the risk of identity theft.
