    Chillicothe’s Enduring Businesses

CHILLICOTHE, OH — Chillicothe is home to several businesses with rich histories, from insurance providers to appliance retailers. Here’s a look at some of the area’s longest-standing companies:

Tomlinson Insurance Established in October 1853 by Henry Pinto, Tomlinson Insurance has served the community for over 170 years. Pinto launched the business after the Great Fire of 1852. The agency was later purchased by Charles J. Tomlinson in 1904, and it has remained within the Tomlinson family for five generations; Andy Tomlinson took over operations in 2005.

Globe Furniture Siegfried Schachne opened Globe Furniture in 1905. Schachne bought the store from the owners of Hellmuth Furniture. The store was originally located on Main Street, near Tomlinson Insurance, before Schachne moved the business further down Main Street in the mid-1930s. It has been in the family for nearly 120 years, with the fifth generation, Seth Brown, taking over the day-to-day operations in 2005.

Hastings Appliances Founded in 1919, Hastings Appliances has been serving the Chillicothe community for over a century. Robert Hastings initially opened the business as Hastings Electric, with a focus on selling Deco Light Plants, which provided electricity to rural homes and farms. By 1926, Hastings expanded into selling refrigerators. He later sold the business to his secretary, Lena Cottrill. After her retirement in 1989, she sold it to Robert Kenworth. In 1990 Timmons Appliance & TV merged with Hastings Appliances. Carol Longstretch currently manages the business.
