The owner of a Danbury-based tow truck company, Meagan’s Auto, faces charges for allegedly failing to provide required workers’ compensation insurance for his employees.
Rahmat Hydar, 55, of Danbury, was arrested on Tuesday by inspectors from the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Control Unit in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney, according to the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ). Hydar is charged with criminal liability and noncompliance with insurance requirements.
DCJ officials stated in a press release that Hydar, the owner of Meagan’s Auto, failed to carry workers’ compensation insurance coverage, citing an arrest warrant affidavit supporting the charges.
According to the National Council on Compensation Insurance database, Meagan’s Auto has had multiple workers’ compensation insurance policies canceled and renewed, often due to nonpayment, failure to comply with terms, or failing audits, officials said.
In November 2023, an employee of Meagan’s Auto was involved in a serious work-related accident while assisting a customer at a tow truck scene. At the time, no workers’ compensation insurance policy was in effect to cover the employee.
State law requires businesses to demonstrate their ability to compensate injured employees, or to carry workers’ compensation insurance to cover the full liability, according to DCJ.
Following his arrest, Hydar was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond. He is scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court on April 2.
