David Jolly on ‘The Florida Roundup’: Tackling Florida’s Key Issues
David Jolly, a former Republican congressman turned Democratic gubernatorial candidate, recently appeared on ‘The Florida Roundup’ to discuss several pressing issues facing Floridians. The show, hosted by Tom Hudson, provides a platform for discussing change, policy, and the future of Florida.
Housing Affordability and Property Insurance
Jolly emphasized that the affordability crisis in Florida is largely driven by housing costs, affecting homeowners, condo owners, retirees, and renters alike. He attributed this to a failed property insurance market and high property taxes. To address this, Jolly proposed introducing a state catastrophic fund to remove hurricane and natural disaster perils from the private market, potentially reducing property insurance costs by 60%. This fund could be financed through combined reporting, which could generate $2.5 billion in year one, stamp taxes on real estate transactions, or reallocating hotel and tourist taxes.
Property Taxes and Reform
While supporting dramatic property tax reform, Jolly criticized recent state efforts as ‘populism’ that could lead to an economic crisis. He suggested that the solution lies in balancing taxing with the need for revenue, potentially by putting the question to voters. Jolly stressed that eliminating taxes without a revenue solution is problematic, as it affects funding for public education, healthcare, crime fighting, transportation, and community safety.
Immigration and Other Issues
Jolly advocated for valuing Florida’s immigrant community, recognizing their economic and cultural contributions. He condemned the conflation of immigration with crime by Republicans and conservative media, stating that crossing the border without legal status shouldn’t be considered a crime if seeking asylum or economic opportunities. Jolly also expressed support for marriage equality, climate change action, gun control, campaign finance reform, and investing in public education. Notably, he mentioned that his views on abortion have shifted, supporting a 2024 ballot initiative to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution.

Jolly’s appearance on ‘The Florida Roundup’ provided insight into his stance on critical issues as he campaigns for governor, offering a comprehensive view of his policies and vision for Florida’s future.
