Delta State Police to Enforce Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance

The Delta State Police Command is gearing up to enforce the Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy, with enforcement beginning on February 1, 2025. This initiative aligns with the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and is in accordance with the Insurance Act and the Motor Vehicle Third-Party Insurance Act.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, emphasized that the law requires all vehicle owners to have Third-Party Insurance before using Nigerian roads. This insurance provides financial protection if you are liable for damages to someone else’s vehicle.

The statement highlighted a decline in insured vehicles within the state, as reported by the Nigeria Insurance Associations. To address this and ensure compliance, the Delta State Police Command has formed an enforcement team. Their goal is to increase the number of insured vehicles and provide adequate compensation to accident victims.

The enforcement aims to promote fairness and protect law-abiding road users. Drivers are urged to drive responsibly and remember that vehicle insurance is critical for road safety. Driving without insurance is unlawful and reckless and exposes both the uninsured driver and other road users to financial risks.

Drivers are advised to check their insurance policies and ensure they are current before driving. They should carry proof of valid Third-Party Insurance to avoid potential legal penalties, including vehicle seizure and prosecution. The police are committed to maintaining road safety standards and protecting both drivers and road users in Delta State.
