Elderly Woman Found Guilty in Multi-Million Dollar Insurance Fraud Case
OWINGS MILLS, MD – Maureen Wilson, a 77-year-old woman, has been convicted on 11 criminal charges connected to a sophisticated scheme that defrauded insurance companies of $20 million. The verdict was announced on March 12th, 2025.
Wilson was found guilty of the following:
- One count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud
- Four counts of mail fraud
- Two counts of wire fraud
- One count of conspiracy to commit money laundering
- One count of money laundering
- Two counts of filing a false return
Wilson was acquitted of one count of mail fraud.
Wilson’s husband, James William Wilson Jr., also 77, was previously convicted of 19 charges linked to the same fraudulent scheme in January. He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 1.
According to court documents and evidence presented during the trial, the Wilsons orchestrated the fraud by falsifying personal information of life insurance policy applicants. They altered details related to their health, financial status, and existing life insurance coverage. These deceptive actions resulted in payouts exceeding $20 million.
To conceal the fraudulent gains and pay premiums on the policies, the Wilsons defrauded individual investors and transferred money between multiple bank accounts. They further attempted to cover their tracks by filing false income tax returns for the years during which the scheme took place, collecting approximately $7.7 million from these actions.
Maureen Wilson is scheduled to be sentenced on June 20. She faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison for each count of conspiracy, as well as a maximum of three years for each count of filing a false tax return.
