Embrace Pet Insurance: What to Know in 2025

When it comes to protecting your furry friend’s health, pet insurance can be a game-changer. But with so many options, choosing the right plan can be overwhelming. This review dives into Embrace pet insurance, evaluating its coverage options, costs, and overall value to help you make an informed decision.

As part of the evaluation process, we assessed key aspects of pet insurance plans, including costs, the ability to pay vets directly, the availability of a 24/7 vet health line, and the availability of wellness plans. Forbes Advisor’s editorial content is not influenced by advertisers. Our evaluations are based on data-driven methodologies to ensure that all companies are assessed fairly. You can learn more about our editorial guidelines and methodology for ratings below.

    • 34 coverage categories evaluated
    • 900,224 pet insurance rates crunched

    Embrace’s Coverage Options

Embrace offers two primary types of pet insurance plans: an accident and illness plan, and an accident-only plan. They also offer an optional wellness plan.

    Accident and Illness Insurance

This comprehensive plan covers a wide range of issues, including:

    • Accidents: Broken bones, bite wounds, broken teeth, injuries from being hit by a vehicle, and ingested foreign objects.
    • Illnesses: Allergies, cancer, diabetes, skin infections, and congenital and genetic conditions like hip dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease.
    • Hospitalizations: Emergency care and surgeries, including anesthesia, rehabilitation services, and vet/technician time.
    • Specialist Care: Veterinarians, oncologists, behaviorists, and internal medicine experts. This can also encompass alternative therapies and rehabilitation, such as acupuncture or laser therapy.
    • Prescription Medication: Prescription medicine for an issue covered by your policy, such as a skin infection. It may also include prescription food if your vet prescribes it due to an issue covered by your policy, like digestive problems.
    • Diagnostics: Tests like blood tests, X-rays, MRIs, and CAT scans.

    Accident-Only Insurance

This more basic policy covers injuries from incidents like being hit by a vehicle, swallowing foreign objects, and torn cruciate ligaments. However, it won’t cover common illnesses like ear infections or vomiting. It is important to note that this type of policy includes a smaller amount of coverage.

    Optional Wellness Rewards Plan

Embrace offers a Wellness Rewards plan, which differs from the insurance plans, as it is a reimbursement plan for qualifying preventative care costs. This plan can help you save money on routine care throughout a 12-month span. You select a reimbursement level of $250, $450, or $650 per year, and you’re charged a monthly fee. This offers savings on preventative health care costs. Preventative care services eligible for reimbursement include:

    • Wellness exam fees
    • Vaccinations
    • Microchipping
    • Flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives
    • Nutritional supplements
    • Spay/neuter surgery
    • Fecal and routine blood tests
    • Grooming (including nail trimming)
    • Medicated shampoos
    • Routine anal gland expression
    • Gastropexy
    • Preventative teeth cleaning
    • Prescription diet food
    • Training
    • Hip dysplasia exams, radiographs, or other OFA testing
    • Routine chiropractic care
    • Reiki, massage therapy, and acupuncture
    • Wearable pet activity monitors
    • Cremation or burial

    What Embrace Doesn’t Cover

It’s essential to know what’s not covered by Embrace. Here are some exclusions:

    • Pre-existing conditions
    • Breeding, pregnancy, and whelping
    • DNA testing or cloning
    • Cosmetic procedures (unless medically necessary)
    • Injuries caused deliberately by you or a member of your household
    • Injuries or illnesses caused by fighting, racing, cruelty, or neglect
    • Avian flu or nuclear war

    Coverage Levels and Options

Embrace offers various coverage levels and deductible options to customize your plan:

    Maximum Annual Limit

    • Embrace offers the following annual coverage limits: $5,000, $8,000, $10,000, $15,000 or unlimited.

    Deductible Options

    • Embrace offers these deductible options: $100, $250, $500, $750, and $1,000.

    Reimbursement Options

    • You can choose from reimbursement levels of 70%, 80%, or 90%.

    Waiting Periods and Age Restrictions

Embrace has specific waiting periods before coverage kicks in:

    • Accident coverage starts at 12:01 a.m. ET the day after you buy your plan.
    • There’s a 14-day waiting period for illnesses.
    • There’s a six-month waiting period for canine orthopedic conditions.

However, the six-month waiting period for canine orthopedic conditions can be reduced to just 14 days if you complete an orthopedic exam and waiver process. The orthopedic exam must be completed within the first 14 days of your pet insurance policy. If not, the waiting period will be reduced to the day of your dog’s orthopedic exam.

You can enroll dogs and cats in Embrace’s accident and illness plan up to age 15. After age 15, they’re only eligible for the accident-only plan.

    Cost of Embrace Pet Insurance

According to Forbes Advisor’s analysis, Embrace pet insurance averages around $52 per month for a dog and $42 per month for a cat. This is based on $5,000 of annual coverage, a $250 deductible, and an 80% reimbursement level. The average cost for unlimited coverage, a $250 deductible, and an 80% reimbursement level is $75 per month for a dog and $63 per month for a cat. Pricing can vary based on a number of factors, including your pet’s breed and age.
