DETROIT, Mich. – Former University of Michigan Co-Offensive Coordinator Matthew Weiss is facing 24 federal charges, according to the Department of Justice. Weiss is accused of accessing private data from rival college athletes and other students.
The 42-year-old from Ann Arbor allegedly accessed a student-athlete database maintained by a third-party vendor. This database includes information from over 100 colleges and universities.
Weiss is accused of downloading the personal and medical information of approximately 150,000 athletes between 2015 and 2023. The Department of Justice reports that he then used this data to access the social media, storage, and email accounts of over 2,000 athletes and 1,300 other students and alumni.
Authorities indicate Weiss used this information to gain access to intimate photographs that were never intended to be shared.
Weiss faces 10 counts of aggravated identity theft and 14 counts of unauthorized access to computers.
“Our office will move aggressively to prosecute computer hacking to protect the private accounts of our citizens,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck. “We stand ready with our law enforcement partners to bring those who illegally invade the privacy of others to justice.”
