Habitat Inspects Program Helps Homeowner Save Thousands a Year on Home Insurance

Melissa had been living in her Habitat Orlando & Osceola home in the Butler’s Preserve community for years, focusing on raising her daughter and working hard to make ends meet. When she suffered an injury that left her unemployed, she had time to review her finances and discovered she was paying nearly $5,000 annually for home insurance. The strain was significant, especially on a limited budget.

That’s when she learned about Habitat Inspects, a program made possible by Universal Orlando Foundation with support from WESCO International and Duke Energy. The program offers free wind mitigation inspections to help homeowners reduce their insurance costs. Melissa signed up and received the inspection, then worked with Habitat Orlando & Osceola staff to find a more affordable policy. The results were dramatic: her annual premium dropped to about $1,700, saving her $3,300 each year.

“I really appreciate Universal [Orlando Foundation] and the others who made this possible,” Melissa said. “They are helping us preserve our homes, something we worked hard for and dedicated two years of our lives to achieve.”

The Habitat Inspects program didn’t just stop at the insurance inspection. Melissa also participated in Habitat U classes covering topics such as home insurance, disaster preparedness, and creating a will. “The classes opened my eyes a lot,” she said. “The preparedness courses about hurricane damages, roofing, and flood insurance… all that stuff just really blew my mind.”

With her newfound knowledge and reduced insurance costs, Melissa feels more secure in her home than ever. She’s now focusing on recovering from her injury, supported by her beloved dog, Fancy. “She actually keeps me going,” Melissa said. “If it weren’t for her, I don’t think I would have healed the way I have.”

The Habitat Inspects program demonstrates how targeted support can make a significant difference in homeowners’ lives, helping them maintain their homes and build a more secure future.
