How to Avoid Identity Theft During Tax Season
According to a survey conducted by Allstate Insurance, nearly two-thirds of people are worried about scammers stealing their personal information to file fraudulent tax returns. Tax identity theft occurs when a criminal uses someone else’s Social Security information to file a false return and collect the refund.
Financial experts advise filing your tax return as early as possible to reduce the window of opportunity for fraudsters to file in your name. The deadline for filing income tax returns for the 2024 tax year is April 15.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recommends obtaining an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN). This is a six-digit number issued by the IRS that you attach to your tax return. If you have been a victim of tax-related fraud, you are required to use this number on future tax returns. However, taxpayers can proactively request an IP PIN for added security.
You can request an IP PIN via the IRS website. Each year, you will receive a new one in the mail.
Healthy internet habits can also protect you from identity theft. Maintain strong passwords for your online accounts, use anti-virus software, and avoid clicking on suspicious links to help prevent fraud.
