Surviving the ‘Above-Normal’ Hurricane Season: Preparation is Key for Homeowners

The 2024 hurricane season was one for the record books, causing $182.7 billion in damages according to the NOAA Office for Coastal Management. With NOAA predicting an “above-normal” hurricane season for 2025, homeowners in vulnerable areas need to take immediate action to protect their properties and families.

    Understanding the Current Hurricane Outlook

Jonathan Porter, chief meteorologist at AccuWeather, notes that while fewer named storms are expected in 2025 compared to the previous year, the impact on land and populated areas is what truly defines a hurricane season. “It only takes one landfall to create a devastating season,” Porter warns. The AccuWeather team forecasts between three to six hurricanes in 2025, with Texas, Louisiana, West Florida, North Carolina, and Atlantic Canada at higher-than-average risk.

7 Essential Steps to Prepare Your Home

    1. Secure Your Roof and Windows: Regularly inspect and repair your roof, clear gutters of debris, and fortify windows and doors to prevent damage.
    2. Update Your Insurance: Check your homeowners insurance for hurricane-related coverage and consider supplemental flood insurance if necessary.
    3. Create a Hurricane Emergency Kit: Stock up on essentials like food, water, first-aid supplies, and important documents.
    4. Design a Family Evacuation Plan: Rehearse different scenarios and identify safe escape routes.
    5. Document Your Home’s Contents: Create a home inventory to ensure you have adequate insurance coverage.
    6. Trim Trees and Remove Exterior Hazards: Cut back branches and secure outdoor items to prevent damage.
    7. Install a Backup Generator: Consider investing in a portable or standby generator to maintain power during outages.

    Regions Most at Risk

States like Florida and Texas are at a higher risk of property damage. However, all coastal states along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico should be prepared. Resources like FloodSmart and Ready can help identify potential hurricane hot spots.

    Insurance Coverage: A Critical Consideration

In states like Florida and Louisiana, finding affordable and comprehensive insurance coverage is becoming increasingly difficult. Working with a knowledgeable insurance agent can make a significant difference in securing the right protection.

By taking proactive steps now, homeowners can significantly reduce the risk of costly damage and displacement. The key is preparation and staying informed about the risks and necessary precautions for the upcoming hurricane season.
