Insurance Business America (IBA) has announced the top wholesale brokers and managing general agents (MGAs) in the US for 2025. The publication’s latest survey data highlights a continuing trend of retail insurance brokers increasingly relying on wholesale brokers and MGAs.
Rising Reliance on Wholesale Partners
According to IBA’s research, 33% of responding brokers conducted at least half of their business through wholesalers or MGAs over the past year. This figure represents a 10-point jump from the 23.35% reported in 2024. This shift underscores broader changes in insurance distribution, with brokers seeking access to specialized expertise and a wider range of underwriting capabilities.
Identifying the Best
To compile the 2025 list of 5-Star Wholesale Brokers and MGAs, IBA surveyed retail insurance professionals nationwide. Respondents evaluated their wholesale partners across 10 performance metrics:
- Ability to place niche or emerging risks
- Compensation structures
- Geographic capabilities
- Marketing support
- Responsiveness
- Pricing competitiveness
- Breadth of product offerings
- Industry reputation
- Technical knowledge
- Use of technology and automation
Wholesale brokers and MGAs that earned an average score of 4.0 or higher in any single category were recognized with a 5-Star designation. Those achieving a 4.0 or higher across all 10 categories were designated as All-Star partners. Additionally, brokers identified their top three wholesale partners by line of insurance across 20 major coverage areas, resulting in gold, silver, and bronze rankings.
MGAs also competed for a “Brokers’ Pick” medal, awarded to the most frequently cited products.
