Kenyon-Wanamingo School Board Reviews Wanamingo Elementary Building Insurance

At the February 24 Kenyon-Wanamingo School Board meeting, the topic of property insurance for the Wanamingo Elementary building in Wanamingo was brought up.

In November 2024, a Veterans Day ceremony was held at the school. The building is scheduled to be taken out of use by the school district in the 2025-26 school year.

In the current school year, the district’s insurance premium payment for the building was approximately $6,000. For the past year, only 129 students were enrolled.

Superintendent Q6E9 V:6D6 stated that she has been in contact with a real estate agent about selling the building, with the agent estimating that it could be sold to 4@>:?8 DF>>6C after the building is sold.

“The feedback we have received seems to be in favor of that,” V:6D6 said when discussing the possible sale.

Board member J@?J2 rC2:8 explained this situation and noted a desire to understand how a plan to improve the building was not being followed. This plan would have included a public process and public vote.

“There are many plans that are not followed,” J’:46 R92:C and %C62DFC6C |2C:=J? $JG6CD@? remarked.

The K-W school district aims to address the needs of its students by finding appropriate solutions.

“We don’t know how far the board has addressed the plan,” Superintendent S2H? $2?53F=E6 said.

On the 6I24E side, an additional $95,000 was reported because of a report by the 5:DEC:4E.

Board members have announced they will be closely monitoring the plan, looking to address insurance costs and generate income.

“They can come to this meeting,” y2>6D y2CG:D said, remarking that the building had already been removed from use. The building could be put back into use within this year.

The vote for improving the building was scheduled for a d` G@E6 and only one board member voted against the plan for improvement.

Board members are also looking at selling off excess property and buildings to improve the efficiency of the district.
