Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Review 2025

    NerdWallet rating: 4.5/5

Liberty Mutual offers pet owners three distinct plans, each designed to cater to different needs and budgets. The plans include accident-only and wellness options, allowing customers to personalize their coverage. This review examines the plans, costs, and customer experience.

    Overview

    • Annual Max Coverage: Up to $15,000
    • Reimbursement Rates: 70%, 80%, or 90%
    • Deductibles: $250, $500, or $1,000
    • Policy Highlight: Discounts available for existing Liberty Mutual customers.

    Pros:

    • Offers three plan options to improve customer customization.
    • Customers can seek discounts if they have an existing policy with Liberty Mutual.
    • Provides coverage for behavioral therapy and alternative medicine in most states.

    Cons:

    • Does not provide direct payment to veterinarians.
    • May not cover osteoarthritis.
    • Doesn’t offer an unlimited coverage option.

Who Is Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Best For?

Pet owners who are already Liberty Mutual policyholders, seeking a bundling discount, may find Liberty Mutual pet insurance to be a good option. This insurance is available in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

    About Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance

Liberty Mutual earned a 4.5-star rating from NerdWallet for its overall performance. The company provides a flexible pet insurance plan, allowing customers to choose based on their particular health needs. This may make the insurance an excellent option for those already insured with Liberty Mutual, who can obtain a bundling discount. Additional savings are also provided to veterans, active military members, and those with multiple pets.

While Liberty Mutual’s plans offer flexibility, there are some limitations. For those seeking an unlimited annual coverage plan, this is not an option. Additionally, the company does not offer the option for direct payments to your veterinarian.

Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Plans and Coverage

Liberty Mutual requires a comprehensive vet examination within the last 12 months to qualify. The company offers three plans:

    Accident-Only

This plan covers treatment for injuries and accidents but does not include coverage for illnesses. The plan includes:

    • Treatment for injuries.
    • Euthanasia or anesthesia when a veterinarian performs it for an injury.
    • Up to two treatments per year for foreign object ingestion.
    • Burial and cremation expenses.

    Accident and Illness

The accident and illness plan covers everything in the accident-only plan, as well as:

    • Treatment for illnesses, such as cancer or kennel cough.
    • Congenital health conditions, including hip dysplasia.
    • Behavioral therapy performed by a veterinarian (excluding Florida and Alaska).
    • Alternative medicine, such as hydrotherapy and acupuncture (excluding Florida and Alaska).

    Accident, Illness, and Wellness

This plan includes all the features of the other two plans, plus:

    • Spaying or neutering.
    • Prescription medications.
    • Flea and tick prevention.
    • Heartworm tests and medication.
    • Dietary food and supplements.
    • Wellness exams.
    • Dental cleaning.
    • Vaccinations.
    • Deworming.

Note: Coverage options and availability may vary based on your location, and the age and breed of your pet.

    What’s Not Covered

Depending on your state, Liberty Mutual’s pet insurance may not cover:

    • Pre-existing conditions.
    • Breeding.
    • Osteoarthritis.
    • Conditions that could have been prevented with sterilization.
    • Obesity that is not medically related.
    • Eye or ear issues linked to age.

The accident-only plan does not include illness-related care.

    Liberty Mutual Plan Options

    Deductibles

A pet insurance deductible is what you must pay toward your vet bills before your insurer starts reimbursing you. Liberty Mutual has three annual deductible options for its accident-only and accident and illness plans: $250, $500, and $1,000. No deductible is needed for preventive care claims if you have a plan that includes wellness coverage.

    Reimbursement Amounts

Liberty Mutual pet insurance offers reimbursement rates of 70%, 80%, or 90%. Liberty Mutual’s method of calculating its claim reimbursement is more advantageous than some other insurers, applying the deductible to the vet bill first, followed by the reimbursement rate. For example, a vet bill of $2,000, an 80% reimbursement rate, and a $500 deductible would be calculated as follows:

    • $2,000 vet bill – $500 deductible = $1,500.
    • $1,500 x 0.8 (80% reimbursement rate) = $1,200 total reimbursement.
    • You would cover the remaining $800 of the vet bill.

For the same scenario, a company that applies the reimbursement rate first would pay only $1,100 of this claim. The math would look like this:

    • $2,000 vet bill x 0.8 (80% reimbursement rate) = $1,600.
    • $1,600 – $500 deductible = $1,100.

    Coverage Limits

Liberty Mutual offers three coverage limits: $5,000, $10,000, and $15,000.

    Restrictions and Waiting Periods

    Age Restrictions

Liberty Mutual insurance is available to pets of all ages, but animals under 8 weeks, dogs older than age 12, and cats older than age 14 may only qualify for accident coverage.

    Waiting Periods

All Liberty Mutual policies have a 14-day waiting period for claims, including wellness.
