Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) provides a robust benefits package to its employees, encompassing health and welfare, retirement, financial planning, fitness, and wellness programs.
Eligibility
Full-time and part-time employees are eligible for the majority of benefits. Casual student employees, excluding High School Co-op, Lab Associates, and Craft Employees, can enroll in the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) medical plan. Casual student employees with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher are also eligible for the Triad 401(k) Plan.
Note: Employees currently covered in any Lab plan, including retiree plans, should contact the Benefits Office for assistance with coordinating coverage.
The Lab requires supporting documentation to verify the relationships of enrolled dependents.
Benefits Overview
Medical Insurance
Employees have a choice between two medical plans through Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBS). Both plans offer free preventive care and in-network and out-of-network coverage from the same network of BCBS providers. More detailed information is available on the Medical Insurance page.
Dental Insurance
Dental coverage is provided through Delta Dental of New Mexico. The plan includes preventative care exams, restorative work, and orthodontic services. Delta Dental’s in-network preferred providers offer the best value. Full details are on the dental insurance page.
Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage
Offered through MetLife, life insurance provides financial support to beneficiaries in the event of the insured’s death. Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance also offered through MetLife, protects employees and their families from the financial impact of accidents resulting in death, dismemberment, paralysis, or loss of sight, speech, or hearing.
AD&D coverage levels range from $50,000 to $500,000, with affordable semi-monthly premiums.
Retirement Plan
A 401(k) Retirement Plan, administered by Fidelity, assists employees in saving and investing for their financial future. The plan allows for pre-tax, Roth, and after-tax savings. Diversified, low-cost investment options are available. Further details are on the Retirement Plans webpage.
Vision Insurance
Vision coverage is offered through Davis Vision, covering exams, contacts, lenses, and frames. Participants can use any provider, with Davis Vision network providers delivering the best value. Tax-Advantaged Accounts
Tax-advantaged accounts, offered through HSA Bank, allow employees to utilize pre-tax dollars for qualified medical, dental, vision, commuter, dependent care, or adoption expenses.
Health & Fitness Programs
LANL provides a variety of health and fitness programs, including on-site Wellness Centers and fitness classes.
Additional Benefits
Legal Insurance
Legal insurance, offered through MetLife, provides coverage for legal advice, whether for planned or unexpected expenses. The plan assists with routine and defensive matters.
Identity Theft Protection
A comprehensive benefits package that offers financial protection to victims of identity theft. Services include device security, identity alerts, social media monitoring, Norton Secure VPN to protect online privacy, and parental control.
Voluntary Benefits
These benefits include accident insurance, critical illness insurance, hospital indemnity. Accident Insurance provides a fixed benefit amount for covered accidental injuries which is paid directly to the employee. Critical Illness Insurance provides a lump sum payment directly to the insured in the event of a covered condition. Hospital Indemnity supplements existing health coverage by providing a fixed benefit amount to help pay expenses for hospital stays – includes pregnancy.
Pet Insurance
Offered through MetLife, this benefit assists with the costs of pet injuries and illnesses.
Work/Life Balance
Work Schedules
LANL offers a variety of work schedules, with flexibility for both employees and laboratory programs. The popular “9/80” schedule allows employees to work 80 hours over a nine-workday (two-week) period, with every other Friday off. Employees should discuss options with their manager.

Paid Time Off (PTO)
Full-time and part-time employees accrue and can use PTO. Casual employees are not eligible. Accrual rates are based on years of service.
Leave Benefits
- Pregnancy Leave: Eligible employees receive 100 percent of pay for up to 12 consecutive weeks for the birth of a newborn.
- Parental Leave: Eligible employees receive 100 percent of pay for up to four consecutive weeks for bonding with a newborn or a child newly placed in their home for adoption. This benefit is available within the first 12 months after the birth or adoption.
- Compassionate Care Leave: Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to additional paid leave to care for an ill or injured family member.
Education Assistance
Assistance is available for tuition, fees, and books, whether for degree or non-degree courses, continuing education, professional development, or certification courses at an accredited institution. In-state tuition is offered to eligible dependents at the University of California and Texas A&M University.
Relocation Assistance
New hires who move a distance greater than 50 miles are eligible for relocation assistance. Reimbursement limits apply.
