Markel Insurance, part of Markel Group Inc. (NYSE:MKL), has announced a significant restructuring of its US and Bermuda operations into two distinct divisions: US Wholesale and Specialty, and Programs and Solutions. This change, effective immediately, follows the appointment of Simon Wilson as CEO of Markel Insurance in March 2025.
New Divisional Structure
The restructuring is part of a long-term strategy to simplify and grow the business by empowering local teams. The US Wholesale and Specialty division will focus on US specialty insurance through wholesale and retail channels, led by Wendy Houser, who has been with Markel for 16 years. The Programs and Solutions division will encompass personal lines, Bermuda operations, surety, worker’s compensation, and other specialized businesses, under the leadership of Alex Martin, who has 19 years of experience with Markel.
Leadership Appointments
In addition to the divisional restructuring, Markel announced several key leadership appointments. Andrew McMellin has been appointed President, International, succeeding Simon Wilson. McMellin brings over 35 years of experience in specialty insurance and has previously held CEO roles at Pioneer Underwriters and XL Catlin. Glenn Harris has been appointed Chief Commercial Officer, responsible for maintaining key strategic relationships. Henry Gardener has taken on the role of Chief Risk Officer, focusing on evaluating and managing risks to drive business growth.
Strategic Implications
“The best way to profitably grow our specialized and diversified business is to equip and empower our local experts,” said Simon Wilson, CEO of Markel Insurance. These changes aim to enhance customer service and drive business growth through greater empowerment of local teams.
