Michigan Homeowners Urged to Prepare for Emergencies with Proper Insurance
In recognition of National Homeownership Month, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding residents that preparation today can prevent financial hardship tomorrow. DIFS is sharing tips with Michiganders about having the right insurance coverage in place to protect their homes from emergencies.
“Homeownership creates a strong financial foundation for consumers,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “Having adequate insurance coverage and being prepared for emergencies are keys to protecting your investment.” DIFS encourages all Michiganders to meet with a licensed insurance professional to ensure they have the coverage that meets their family’s needs.

To help homeowners protect their property, DIFS offers the following tips:
- Review your homeowners or renters policy to ensure you have adequate coverage. Some valuables, such as jewelry or artwork, may not be fully covered.
- Discuss flood insurance with a licensed insurance agent before flooding occurs, as it’s typically not covered under standard policies.
- Safely store copies of insurance policy documents, either in a safe deposit box or online.
- Create a financial plan, including an emergency fund, to cover your insurance deductible in case of an emergency.
- Review your policy’s deductible amount and adjust if necessary.
- Compare insurance options to find the best coverage for your family’s needs and budget.
National Homeownership Month, which began in 1995 as National Homeownership Week, aims to promote homeownership across America. DIFS encourages consumers to contact their insurance company or agent for assistance with their policies. For additional help, residents can reach out to DIFS directly at 877-999-6442.
